Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King George’s Medical University, situated in the heart of the historic city of Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) is an integral part of the Dental Faculty which started in the year 1967. The department has been involved in the training of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental students since then. The department takes pride in the distinction of being one of the few centres in the country to be recognized by the Royal college of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK as a quality postgraduate training centre. The incidence of Oral Cancer is steadily increasing in North India. The risk of development of oral cancer in North India can be more precisely defined through the typical oral consumption of tobacco products here. We at King George Medical University have been treating oral precancerous lesions and oral cancer since last 18 years. The cases of oral cancer and oral submucous fibrosis are increasing in OPD with time. Keeping these points in mind, there is an urgent need for carrying out baseline prevention programme involving awareness, screening and early detection of Oral cancer.
This website is being launched in collaboration with State Science and Technology Programme of Department of Science & Technology (DST) which was established in May 1971, with the objective of promoting new areas of Science & Technology and to play the role of a nodal department for organising, coordinating and promoting S&T activities in the country. One aim is to create awareness by uploading one knowledge pack every week, in context to recent updates on Oral Cancer. The knowledge pack will be such that it will motivate the people more regarding behavioural modifications, promotion of self examination and prevention of the condition. Other being promotion of screening and early diagnosis of Oral Cancer and Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.
Persons interested to get screened can register themselves by filling the questionnaire. The link for the questionnaire form is given under contact us section of website. The link can also be sent via whatsapp and email to persons who contact us via these modes. The screening appointment will be scheduled at the clinic operated by the project to the registered persons, by sending them a message on their registered mobile number. A free screening clinic will be organized in a convenient location within each tehsil of district of Unnao, which will be operated for once every week. An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon will provide screenings at the screening clinic. At the clinic, participants will be asked to complete the consent forms. If anything is noticed that may be suspicious of oral cancer, an expert examination and biopsy will be taken if needed.
It is a small initiative in the journey of connecting first the state of Uttar Pradesh then our country India, to curb Oral Cancer from the society with is taking a shape of epidemic.
