Risk factors for oral cancer

Risk factor is something that increases the chance of developing cancer. It could be a medical condition, any substance or behavioral modification. Most  of the cancers are the result of many risk factors. Tobacco and alcohol are the major risk factors for oral cancer. The risk of developing oral cancer increases with age and is greatest after 45 years of age. Men are more prone towards oral cancer in comparison to women.

The following factors increase one’s chance of developing oral cancer:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Previous cancer
  • Family history
  • Sun exposure
  • Diet low in vegetables and fruit
  • Weakened immune system
  • Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
  •  Poor oral health
  •  Inherited conditions

 Lower your risk of developing oral cancer by doing the following:

  • Be a non-smoker and avoid smokeless tobacco
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
  • Get vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Reduce your exposure to HPV
  • Protect yourself from the sun
  • Eat vegetables and fruit
  • Practise good mouth care
  • Find out if you’re at high risk
